Gavin has the book; he has the knowledge, and he is a Business Coach and Russ wanted to know if Gavin was available to do half-hour chats with people from a coaching perspective on a shop-by-shop basis or was it too difficult in this climate to reach people. With tools like Zoom and Microsoft Teams, Gavin is now able to coach from a remote perspective. It has always been great to go onsite and look at shops but when you do that you are bringing more expense to the business owner. But if you can start fundamentally from coaching remotely, starting to do a bit of analysis on their numbers, getting them to understand their numbers, then you can start to make those subtle changes that can turn the business around and make those improvements.
For anyone interested in coaching they can head to www.planningplus.com.au and select the Consult tab and book in a session from there. Gavin will then have an initial talk to you about what is happening in their shop. We can then send a proposal on working together on a regular basis with costings, what he will commit you what you need to commit in return
Russ and Gavin both know – its about buying into it, the more you put in, the more you put out.
The beauty of coaches, and that is a chapter in the book about intangible services, is there is so much help there but sometimes that help gets bypassed. Whether you are using your paint company and their own internal consultants or different consultants and coaches out there, some will be a cost to your business, but you have to look at your return on investment.
A coach will make you squirm in your chair, because that is a coach’s job. Their job is to actually get you to go to the places that you’re a little uncomfortable with, and then start to pull you through from saying “Well, what are our solutions to this problem? And then drawing the solutions out and creating an impactful way to then implement a process to turn that measurement around, or to turn yourself around because the problem might not be the shop floor – the problem could be yourself.
Sometimes you need to look in the mirror
In Russ’s journey at he has been to hundreds of shops and noticed if the owner wants to find the problem, he just has to look in the mirror, that is where the control is and if he has the business set up right within his own head, then it can be very successful. It starts at looking in the mirror and being honest with yourself and taking advantage of the tools that are out there.
